All of us struggle with something that isn't as trivial as a financial rough patch. We struggle to be kind. We struggle to be content. We struggle to practice patience. We struggle to believe. But because we love God, we are kind, content, patient believers, right?
Hebrews 4:15 is a reminder that my feelings aren't overlooked by our Savior, When we are patient with others and our flesh doesn't want to be patient with others, it is an act of unconditional love to the Father, not a moment of inauthenticity. The crucifying of our will for glory of God is the place where we should live, even though it's uncomfortable.
Hebrews 4:14-16
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. .For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Let's Get Real
The Father's power and love over you will not decrease at the sound of your irritation. We do not serve a God that makes a habit of dismisses our feelings, all of who we are matters to God. The psalms make it clear that God calls us to come to him sighs and questions, not with inauthenticity. In Psalm 56:8, Yahweh gathered the tears of the psalmist out of love and relationship. How much more will God do that for you?
Psalm 56:8
You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?
God doesn't want the "you" that you present to your church friends or your co-workers, he wants you. The one who struggles with the concept of predestination. The one who struggles with God's stance on same-sex relationships. The one who struggles with having faith in God and Hoodoo. God wants to transform the authentic you into his image. The Pharisees were especially inauthentic. They hid their sin to appear righteous before men, and was not pleasing to God. Because of their envy, Jesus did not befriend them, but he did take a private meeting with one of them (John 3:1-15). Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, asked some extremely hard questions, but they were honest questions. And the Lord answered them. When we are in a funk of irritation, we must pray honest and authentic prayers:
Lord, I hate this but I trust you.
Here's my heart, Lord.
Help!
We’re being “transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18), we won’t be fully perfected until heaven. Therefore, our initial responses to uncomfortable situations or conflict in this life will often be to “not feel like it.” If our parents waited for us to feel like obeying before they trained us, we would be a complete mess. Our feelings don't have the power to make us disobey unless we give our feelings that power. As we confess our sins and approach God with honesty, he reminds us of who we are, and he gives us direction. His way is better, even when we don't like his way.
Philippians 2:12-13 ESV
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
